Educating and Encouraging Undocumented DC Residents to File Taxes
Throughout the 2016 tax season, Capital Area Asset Builders (CAAB) and the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) partnered to provide free workshops in Spanish to inform and educate undocumented DC residents on the process to apply for an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) issued by the IRS; and, encourage them to report income and file taxes with the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia.
CARECEN and CAAB hosted 11 workshops from January through April 2016. During the workshops, District residents were provided the steps to follow to request from the IRS an ITIN for themselves and their dependents residing in DC, benefits to report income and file taxes, and information on free tax preparation services offered by the DC EITC Campaign.
We thank the support received from the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development and the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs.
