The District of Columbia has the highest rate of residents in the Greater DC Area not having a banking relationship. Almost 11% of District residents are unbanked: don’t have a checking or savings account. Moreover, 25% of District residents are underbanked: have a bank account but still use alternative financial services such as check-cashing or payday loans. This week, Capital Area Asset Builders (CAAB) is launching the DC Saves Campaign to encourage DC residents to start saving or improve their saving habits as part of the national America Saves initiative.

The Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers that the earlier in the year they check their withholding, the easier it will be to get the right amount of tax withheld. Besides wages, income tax is often withheld from other types of income, such as pensions, bonuses, commissions and gambling winnings. Ideally, taxpayers should try to match their withholding with their actual tax liability. If not enough tax is withheld, they will owe tax at the end of the year and may have to pay interest and a penalty. If too much tax is withheld, they will lose the use of that money until they get their refund.

26 Million Consumers Are Credit Invisible in the US

According to a report released yesterday by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) 26 million Americans are “credit invisible.” This figure indicates that one in every 10 adults do not have any credit history with a nationwide consumer reporting agency. The report also found that Black consumers, Hispanic consumers, and consumers in low-income neighborhoods are more likely to have no credit history with a nationwide consumer reporting agency or not enough current credit history to produce a credit score.

Washington, DC is in the bottom 5 states in the nation with regard to its residents not having a banking relationship. Almost 25% of DC residents don’t have savings accounts and over 11% have no banking relationships at all, according to the Corporation for Enterprise Development (CFED). This week, Capital Area Asset Builders (CAAB) is launching the DC Saves Campaign to encourage DC residents to start saving or improve their saving habits as part of America Saves.
