Bringing More Federal Dollars to DC Low-Income Individuals and Families Through the EITC

In 2023, over 43,000 DC Residents Received over $180 Million in the Federal and DC Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). However, Thousands of Eligible DC Residents are not Taking Advantage of this Valuable Tax Credit.

Washington, DC - January 26, 2024. Capital Area Asset Builders (CAAB) is proud to announce the launch of the 2024 DC EITC Campaign. The #DCEITC Campaign is a citywide, cross-sector initiative that promotes economic security and asset building for low- and moderate-income individuals and families by providing access to information on the Federal and DC Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), free tax preparation services and financial capacity building opportunities throughout Washington, DC.

"The EITC is one of the most effective policy tools for lifting Americans out of poverty," said Joseph Leitmann-Santa Cruz, CAAB's CEO & Executive Director. "It is our objective that all eligible DC residents are aware of the Federal and DC EITC and claim it. The EITC can make a real difference to low- and moderate-income Washingtonians. Those DC residents who qualify for and receive the Federal EITC should also claim the DC EITC which at 70% of the Federal tax credit is the nation's most robust state EITC."

In 2023, over 43,000 low- to moderate-income working District residents received over $180 million in the EITC at the federal and DC levels. Through CAAB's #DCEITC Campaign Washingtonians in all 8 Wards will have access to information on what the EITC is, how to claim it, and where to file Federal and DC taxes for free.

CAAB's #DCEITC Campaign seeks to ensure all eligible District residents know about the EITC and claim it. CAAB estimates that as many as 20,000 low-income DC residents-primarily residents of Wards 4, 5, 7 and 8-are still not claiming the EITC thus not receiving about $40 million in federal tax credits.

The goals of CAAB's #DCEITC Campaign are to: 1) Promote awareness of the Federal and DC Earned Income Tax Credit to ensure that eligible workers know how to claim the credits; 2) Educate taxpayers about numerous Federal and DC tax benefits; 3) Provide opportunities for free tax preparation for qualified DC residents; and, 4) Connect taxpayers with programs and services to improve financial stability.

CAAB appreciates the support from the DC Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking, Greater Washington Community Foundation's Health Equity Fund, Share Fund, Kini Fund, Cafritz Foundation and other private sector partners to offer the year-round #DCEITC Campaign.
